And the Oscar Goes To…

Recognize this guy?

mark wahlberg weight loss

Wait, could it be…?

Could it really be Mark Wahlberg? The same man who recently starred in Transformers: Age of Extinction?

Surprisingly, yes! Your eyes have not deceived you. Wahlberg has transformed himself by shedding over sixty pounds in a limited amount of time for his new role in The Gambler.

This is not the first time we’ve seen a famous actor shed an obscene amount of weight for a role before award season.

Do you remember Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club? McConaughey transformed his image from the boy-next-door, ditzy funny guy into an Academy Award-winning actor. He altered his public image drastically so audiences would take him seriously. If you ask me, McConaughey has an incredibly talented group of PR professionals on his team. He completely revamped his image and reinvented himself as an actor. Talk about taking a leap forward.

Now let’s look at Wahlberg’s next move.

Looking at Wahlberg’s decision through a PR lens, The Gambler could be a game-changer for his career. If done well, Wahlberg could find himself following in the career footsteps of McConaughey and winning himself an Oscar. Unlike his previous films (i.e, Transformers, Ted, Entourage), Wahlberg steps into a more serious, intense and demanding role as the professor in The Gambler.

Written by Oscar-winner William Monahan, The Gambler tells the story of a literature professor with a gambling problem who finds himself running with the wrong crowd. As an well-known actor hungry for an Oscar, transforming himself for The Gambler could be the best PR move Wahlberg has made in a while.

Can Wahlberg pull it off? Will he be able to satisfy his Oscar craving? I guess we will have to wait until the movie hits theaters on December 19th to find out.
